Formula: 0.40xQ1 + 0.40xQ2 + 0.20xExam.

If the test is still ahead and you have a target T:

Required test = (T – 0.40xQ1 – 0.40xQ2) / 0.20

A 10-point system on the test moves the semester grade by 2 points, As because the test is 1/5 of the term. While a 10-point swing on a quarter moves it by 4 points. That is why a rough quarter give pain more than a rough test in this model.

Other semester mixes

Not every school uses 40/40/20.

• 45 / 45 / 10 – test is a small bump. You almost cannot jump a full letter with it alone.
• Equal trimesters – three terms at about 33.33% each, with no separate test row.
• 50 / 50 – no test, or test already folded into the second quarter.
• 60 / 40 – some courses weight the second half more, or treat a project as the “final.”
• Two exams – Some schools divide the test line and enter into there row by entering there weightage.

Do not use 40/40/20 formula as because your friend is uses as because may b his school not use the same formula as each school sometime use a different formula. If in your LMS they already includes the finals inside a quarter average, then don’t add the test again as that become duplicate.

Full-year 20 / 20 / 20 / 20 / 20

For a year-long course, four quarters and a final at 20% each:

Year grade = 0.20x(Q1 + Q2 + Q3 + Q4 + Exam)

That is the same as averaging five numbers. If four quarters average 86% and you want a 90% year grade:

Required test = 90×5 – (Q1+Q2+Q3+Q4) = 450 – 344 = 106% if the quarters sum to 344. Over 100% means the year-A is gone unless there is extra credit. Drop the target to 88% and the required test becomes 96% – still hard, but real.

Four quarters, no exam

Year grade = (Q1 + Q2 + Q3 + Q4) / 4

You can say that 25% each quarter. If Q4 is still in progress and not yet completed then it will be treated as remaining weightage. and it solve the issue for Q4 average.

Letters on the report card

If the portal stores A, B, C instead of 93 and 84, convert with your school’s scale before weighting. A typical conversion is A = 95, B = 85, C = 75. Districts that average quality points use A = 4, B = 3, then convert the average back to a letter (for example 3.5-4.0 = A). Mixing percents from one class with quality points from another will not match the transcript.

Midterms vs finals

A midterm in January is often the “exam” for semester 1. A May/June test is the exam for semester 2 or for the whole year. Some courses have both. Run the calculator once per semester with that semester’s two quarters and that semester’s exam. Then, if the year grade is the average of two semesters, average those two results 50/50 – unless the handbook says otherwise.
