What Grade Do I Need on My Final Exam? Formula and Examples

TO check that which score you needed for your final exam

Here are below things you need first to calculate it:

• Current grade – This is your current progress in percentage fore the finals. Don’t use your LMS portal total as because they uses the ungraded exam as a zero.
• Target grade – This is the result that you want to achieve for after exam. That’s your goal. Normally you want 90 for an A while if you not fast in learning then your target will be 70 to pass your course.
• Final exam weight – That means that how much exam is worth like in 40/40/20 formula there the 20% is of your final grade that mean’s that your exam weight is 30.

Do not use your last test score as consider for current score. You should always use the current course average that you can get from your portal. But remember that if portal already count the exam as zero then you not get the accurate result then you need to manually calculate the current progress and then use our calculator.

The formula

Write the weight as a decimal. A 25% exam is 0.25. The piece (1 – weight) is everything in the class that is already graded.

Example 1: Protect an A-

Current grade 88%. You want 90%. Final is worth 30%.

1. 1 – 0.30 = 0.70 of the course is done.
2. 88 x 0.70 = 61.6 points already in the bank.
3. 90 – 61.6 = 28.4 points still needed.
4. 28.4 / 0.30 = 94.7% on the exam.

A high A on the exam gets you there. A 90 on the exam would finish around 88.6% – still an A- on some scales, a B+ on others. Always match the letter cutoff your school actually uses.

Example 2: Can I still pass?

Current grade 58%. You need 60% to pass. Final is worth 20%.

1. 1 – 0.20 = 0.80 already done.
2. 58 x 0.80 = 46.4.
3. 60 – 46.4 = 13.6.
4. 13.6 / 0.20 = 68% on the test.

A modest test score is enough. That is the point of calculating before you panic: a passing calculator often shows you do not need a miracle, you need a plan.

Example 3: The required score is over 100%

Current grade 72%. You want 90%. Final is worth 15%.

Required = (90 – 72 x 0.85) / 0.15 = (90 – 61.2) / 0.15 = 192%.

That A is not available from the test alone. You should down the target to 80% and recheck the calculation: (80 – 61.2) / 0.15 = 125% – still impossible. At 75%: (75 – 61.2) / 0.15 = 92%. A strong test can still lift a C into a C+, but it cannot manufacture a large share of the course that has already been graded.

When it count as test

Some instructors put the final exam in same category as a unit test. If they do like then exam is not separate. Then it’s mean that 40/40/20 that formula format is not apply.

E.g if the tests are 50% of the course and you given the four tests already. then the fifth last one is consider for as final and as because it is 1/5 ratio so we can say final is 10% of the course. For the good result then treat the 4 test that already given take the average of them and consider them as final as another test of equal weight.
