Weighted vs Points-Based Grade Calculator: Which System Is Your Class Using?

If there are two classes that tell that there percentage is 85%, but the way they calculate that grade will be different. First class may b use the weighted categories system while another class just adds to calculate it. Whenever you calculate make sure that it matches your school LMS pattern that how they calculate to get the accurate results.

Open the Weighted and Points tabs Same tool, two modes – match the method on your syllabus, then calculate the final.

How check that which system we have?

Always checkout your class syllabous grading system. If you see the grade system then weighted class it is. And if the percentage as 100 then it would be like that:

  • Homework 15%
  • Quizzes 20%
  • Projects 25%
  • Midterm 15%
  • Final exam 25%

If the teacher talk about total then it is points-based. Then he tell that for this term there will be e.g 800 and for the final it has 200 and total it become 1000. Also separate assignment has different values. That not depend on the categories percent As they are treated as extras.

Weighted grade calculator math

Each category gets its own average, then those averages are multiplied by the category weight.

CategoryCategory averageWeightContribution
Homework96%20%19.2
Quizzes84%20%16.8
Midterm78%25%19.5
Final (not yet)35%
Course completed => 20% + 20% + 25% = 65%
Current average => (19.2 + 16.8 + 19.5) ÷ 0.65 = 85.4%
If you want to achieve the 90% grade then:
(90 − 85.4 × 0.65) ÷ 0.35 = 98.6%
You needed the 98.6% to achieve the goal.

Points-based grade calculator math

Ignore categories. Add everything.

AssignmentEarnedPossible
Homework set4850
Quiz 11820
Lab7080
Midterm82100
So far218250
Current grade:
218 ÷ 250 = 87.2%
If the final exam need more 100, then course needed 350 total.
For a 90% overall grade that how much we needed:
350 × 0.90 = 315 points
As we already have the 218 points, so:
315 − 218 = 97 points
So from the final we need to achieve the 97 points out of 100 to reach our target goal.

What Unweighted is

This term unweighted grade calculator we process in two days. In a single class unweighted means point-based. It’s mean that there is no percentage of categories. On your degree there unweighted GPA means that any honor or reward not get extra points. Those are the different things. Here on this article we are discussing class weighted. not about the GPA weighting for college or high schools.

Low Score, Extra Credits, Missing Work

If a ssmall low quiz is miss then you can remove that quiz before you average the quiz weighted category or before you add the points if it is points-based system. There extra credit mean getting extra points into the points-based system while into the weighted class they are added into a category and due to it your grade sometime become above 100%. Sometime missing work also sad us especially for the small homework categories. As because that the reason weighted and the points-based system become little different.

Don’t ever enter a category average and the assignments altogether into that category as because they counted as double. If LMS already calculate it then use the category average. Use the individual assignment task only when each has it’s own weight.

Pick matching tab and add final exam

Once you calculate the curernt average and also the upcoming average also. Then remaining is final exam average to count. That only one step is remaining for a weight percentage. Our final grade calculator it has both method. So on your choice either if the target is over th e100% or not. You can deal with all ones. Checkout our what grade do i need on my final article that detail about for final exam grade formula and calculation. Frequently asked questions

How check that my class has points-based or weighted average system?

If the course syllabous show the percentage like homework 15%, that thing 25%, final exam 25% etc then it’s mean that you are in weighted average. And if your instructor tell about total as points it tell that mid term has that e.g 400 points 200 points of final exam then it’s mean that your system is points-based.

How weighted class grade are calculated?

Here each categories has there own average. we multiply these category weight and add them together. e.g A 96% homework average at 20% of the course contributes 19.2 points toward the final grade.

How the weighted class grades are calculated?

Here your grade is based on total points that you earned from total available points. You can add all points and then divide it with total possible points. There is no such average percentage formula as because here each assignment and quiz has different number points.

What is unweighted mean for a class grade?

In a single class, unweighted usually means points-based: no category percents. On a transcript, unweighted GPA means honors and AP do not get extra GPA points. Those are different problems. This page is about one class, not GPA weighting for college admissions.
